Texas Insurance CE — Frequently Asked Questions

How many CE hours do Texas insurance producers need? +
Many Texas insurance producers must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years. This includes at least 3 hours of ethics, and at least half of the required hours must be completed in classroom or classroom-equivalent courses. No more than half of your hours can be self-study.
When is my Texas insurance license renewal due? +
Texas insurance license renewals are generally due on the last day of your birth month, every two years. You can check your renewal date and CE transcript status using Sircon's tools at sircon.com.
What happens if I miss my Texas CE deadline? +
TDI applies a $50 fine for each CE hour not completed by your expiration date, up to $500 per license. You must complete missing CE and pay any fines to become compliant. If not resolved within 90 days after expiration, your license becomes inactive.
Do Texas producers need special training to sell annuities? +
Yes. Texas resident agents who want to sell annuities must first complete an approved Annuity Best Interest 4-hour certification course. After certification, resident agents must complete 8 hours of annuity-specific CE each term, which counts toward the overall CE total.
Is flood insurance training required in Texas? +
Flood training applies to agents who sell Standard Flood Insurance Policies through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It is not a blanket requirement for all P&C licensees.
How do I verify a course is TDI-approved? +
Use Sircon's Approved Courses Inquiry at sircon.com. Search by state, provider, or course title to confirm current approval status and credit hours before enrolling.
Can I take the same CE course twice in one renewal period? +
No. TDI does not allow the same course to be repeated for credit within the same two-year license term. Track which courses you've completed to avoid enrolling in a duplicate that won't count toward renewal.
What is a classroom equivalent (CLEQ) course? +
A classroom-equivalent course is an online course delivered in a format that meets TDI's stricter interactive standards. Texas requires at least half of your CE hours in classroom or classroom-equivalent formats. Check the course instruction method before enrolling.
